What the dates mean

A year here is the first year we could document for the model — from a manual, a catalogue capture, a serial range or a manufacturer announcement. It is not necessarily the first day of sale, and production often continued for years after. Where the date is uncertain the model simply has no year rather than a guess: 905 models in the index are undated for that reason.
